Starlight, Stallone, and a serenade = winners!
Clueless in Clarendon, against all odds (and much to our own surprise) came in FIRST at trivia night! Wooooo hooooo!!!
Let's see. It all started with Joan *abandoning us* to sit with the Mayor of Svenland and his team. (As it turned out, they came in second...) But she didn't particularly enjoy her time there, so I think she'll be back with Clueless next week. ;)
After the photo round, which was all pictures from musicals and thus very easy (May gave us Starlight Express and Oliver!) the questions were terribly difficult. We even complained to Patrick (who got himself an adorable haircut between last week and this). :)
The "tuchus point" (aptly named as E. pulled the answer from somewhere where the sun don't shine) was on the question about a singer arrested for alleged indecency in March 1969 in Miami -- who was that? Jim Morrison.
There were a lot of geography and history questions tonight. To what country does the island of Zanzibar belong? [Tanzania] Which country was the first to join with Nazi Germany in 1936-- Japan or Italy? [Japan. We got it wrong.] What is the most populous European country? Germany (that one we got) A U.S. bomber crashed into what building on July 28, 1945? The Empire State Building. What's the only US state that borders a Canadian territory? Alaska.
Then there were the entertainment ones- Name the movie set in 2032 starring Sylvester Stallone. [Demolition Man] Who played Rachel's little sister(s) on Friends? [Reese Witherspoon and Christina Applegate] What was the movie in which Morgan Freeman played the President of the United States? [Deep Impact]
May used her newly acquired medical knowledge to assure us that the substance with three oxygen molecules was ozone. She also was convinced that Monica Seles was the one who broke Steffi Graf's winning streak in 1990, and she was right. [We said Jennifer Capriati. oops.] Most Googled female athlete: Anna Kournikova. duh. (although not so much an athlete any more)
Some that surprised us: What country consumes the most ice cream per capita? Australia.
Who sang "Rich Girl" that "Son of Sam" David Berkowitz said drove him to kill? Hall & Oates. (drink one for Dani for convincing us she was right!) After water, what is the most popular drink in the world? Tea. (yes, May was right, we were wrong, we said Coke.)
The music round was not nearly as much fun as last week, but it started off well -- Patrick decided that instead of 70's music (which we had all studied), he would sing "Power Ballads." oy vey. First was Elton John's "Our Song," which he serenaded Elizabeth with! Unfortunately, she absolutely hates being singled out in a crowd, so she was a little uncomfortable. But she did give him a kiss on the cheek afterwards. :) awww... Then he sang, "Tonight, I celebrate my love for you" -- Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack. (we think we got half points for PB.) Then came "Up Where We Belong" -- one of my favorite songs, from An Officer and a Gentleman. [Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, although the question asked for the two men who sang it - the other was Kenny Rogers.] The fourth song was a Lou Reed song that we didn't get when Patrick sang it (poor boy was very tired tonight...) and finally, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" - [Bonnie Tyler] -- which we sang as loudly as we could. 3.5 out of 5 ain't bad. ;)
At the end, Patrick read off the third place team, then the second place team (Joan and the folks from Svenland), and then he started saying he was glad that the first place team had finally won, they had been coming in second for a few weeks now ... and then he was standing next to US! We were totally flabbergasted. I believe my exact words were "How the hell did that happen?" But we wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth! So I think Saturday night we will be spending our winnings (a $50 RiRa gift card) at the bar! (where Patrick will be bartending...) I think I'll bring my camera. :)
